LA County Supervisor Proposes Plan for Mens Central Jail

Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has a plan which he claims would improve county jail inmate rehabilitation efforts, while also saving precious county funds. Yaroslavsky wants the Board of Supervisors to consider removing a portion of the Men’s Central Jail and replacing it with a facility for inmates who suffer from mental illness and drug addiction. 

“The way we handle mental health and substance abuse is not good,” Yaroslavsky said. “My view is, if we’re going to spend any serious money on the jail, it should be in those areas.”

Next month, the county will unveil a dynamic new mental health facility, located in the City of Marina. Under a new plan, several smaller centers are being consolidated into this single, overarching facility. Officials say the purpose of the consolidation is to accommodate the growing number of indigent mental health patients who will soon be eligible for treatment under the Affordable Care Act.

Only four months after his recent retirement, former assistant District Attorney Joseph Beard may be rehired by the Imperial County Supervisors. The supervisors are currently deliberating, but if Beard is rehired, he will be working on “highly sensitive cases he was working on” prior to his retirement according to an Assistant District Attorney.

San Bernardino Extends Chief Executive Officer's Contract Until 2017

San Bernardino county supervisors are pleased with county Chief Executive Officer Greg Devereaux’s performance, and they’re showing it by extending his stay for another four years. In a unanimous vote Tuesday, the board opted to extend Devereaux’s contract until 2017. A clause in his contract will allow Devereaux to remain as CEO, at the board’s discretion, for an additional three years after that
