Riverside County Officials Could Soon See Pay Hike

The Riverside County Board of Supervisors will debate a proposal Tuesday that would raise the salaries for five elected leaders by as much as $50,000. The proposal was recommended by the Riverside County Human Resources Department in an effort to bring Riverside’s salaries in line with that of other counties and would constitute the first such raise for all 5 county leaders since 2008.

If the proposal is approved, the county sheriff’s and district attorney’s salaries would rise from $223,166 to $273,000 on September 18; the county assessor, auditor, and treasurer would see a raise of $34,273, bringing their salaries to $200,000 per year. A subsequent raise of 2 percent would follow on July 9 of 2015.

By comparison, San Bernardino’s auditor-treasurer made $255,143 last year. San Bernardino’s sheriff earned $225,499, while the county’s district attorney and assessor took home $206,231 and $203,428 respectively.

Two years ago, Riverside County Supervisors rejected a proposal for pay hikes which were even smaller than those currently being proposed. But, since then, times have changed, according to Supervisor John Benoit.

“You can hold off and hold off, but at some point you have to recognize the moral and other implications of when the boss is getting paid less than other people in the agency,” Benoit said Thursday.

In addition the 5 county officials, Supervisors are also considering a measure which would boost their own salaries by tying them to those of Superior Court Judges. Riverside supervisors haven’t seen a pay boost since December 2010 but, since that time, Superior Court judges have had their salaries boosted twice by less than 2 percent.
