Cal Fire Veteran Named Riverside County Fire Chief

Cal Fire has announced a new chief of fire and medical services in Riverside County. Shawn Newman, a 48-year-old Cal Fire veteran, has been named to the job. He took over as chief of the Riverside County Fire Department and chief of the Cal Fire Riverside Unit on Aug. 1.

Newman has been with Cal Fire since 1989. He first worked with the San Bernardino Unit and was then transferred to Riverside’s, becoming an engineer in 2001 and continuing to move up through the ranks. In 2016, he was promoted to assistant chief at Southern Operations and promoted again to deputy chief last year.

Newman is replacing Daniel Talbot who has served as interim chief since the abrupt removal of Chief John Hawkins in January. Cal Fire’s decision to remove Hawkins, who still serves as a unit chief, has never been fully explained.
