Amador County Authorities Say CHP Officer Carried Out Murder-Suicide

An off-duty officer with the California Highway Patrol wounded a store owner and then killed his wife in a parking lot Monday night before turning the gun on himself, according to deputies with the Amador County Sheriff’s Department.

The CHP Officer has been identified as 45-year-old Brad Wheat. His wife was 42-year-old Mary Wheat.

The store owner was shot in the shoulder while Wheat was trying to get to his wife. The owner had to be air-lifted to the hospital and is expected to recover.

“They were both very personable, easy to get to know and easy to like. She was very bubbly, I think more outgoing than Brad," Amador County’s sheriff said of the couple, who were well-known locally.
