California’s Top Health Official Resigns

California Department of Public Health Director Dr. Sonia Angell has resigned after a technical glitch that slowed down coronavirus reporting and monitoring in the state.

"I want to thank Dr. Angell for her service to the state and her work to help steer our public health system during this global pandemic, while never losing sight of the importance of health equity," Governor Newsom said in a statement. While neither Newsom nor Dr. Angell provided a reason for her departure, the snafu was hinted at as a cause.

The technical glitch has since been fixed. Counties will resume joining and leaving the state’s coronavirus watch list this week. For a brief period, the state was unable to update its watch list.
