L.A. County Will Not Accept Elementary School Waiver Requests

Los Angeles County health officials will not consider waiver requests from elementary schools that wish to reopen campuses, the Health Department said Tuesday.

“We know that to many families, this is a disappointing announcement, but it’s based on the existing science and data that is guiding all of our decision-making. We need to ensure the health and safety of our children, school teachers and staff and all of their families,” the department said.

New state rules prohibit the reopening of campuses in counties on the state’s monitoring list. However, the state is permitting elementary schools to apply for waivers through their health departments if their case rates are below 200 for every 100,000 residents. Currently, Los Angeles County has a case rate of 355 per 100,000. Once that rate falls, county health officials said they would reconsider accepting applications.
