Humboldt County’s New Rules for Unvaccinated Employees
Humboldt County employees are still free to shun the COVID-19 vaccine. Those who do, however, will soon need to undergo weekly testing following a six-hour special meeting of the Board of Supervisors Tuesday night.
Humboldt County Health Officer Dr. Ian Hoffman spoke in favor of the policy. Noting that unvaccinated individuals are 11 times more likely to be hospitalized or die from the virus, he called the vaccine “our best tool to end the pandemic and get us out of this.”
Interestingly, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Director Connie Beck was among those who opposed the new rules. She said her department is already short-staffed and any kind of mandate could make that worse. She was joined by Sheriff William Honsal, Public Works Director Tom Mattson, District Attorney Maggie Fleming and Treasurer-Tax Collector John Bartholomew in favoring the status quo.
The County Administrative Office will now develop specifics for the policy and present it to supervisors for approval.
