San Diego’s Chief Financial Officer Named CAO

San Diego County’s Deputy Chief Administrative Officer/Chief Financial Officer Ebony Shelton has been hired as the county’s next Chief Administrative Officer. Shelton will take over on June 14, five months after the retirement of longtime CAO Helen Robbins-Meyer.

The Board of Supervisors approved Shelton’s appointment Tuesday in a unanimous vote. She will be the first Black woman to serve as county CAO.

Shelton has worked for the county for 30 years.

“We selected a candidate who has deep roots in this community," said Board Chair Nora Vargas. "For anyone who knows Ebony or has worked with her, she is a person of integrity, positivity and grace."

At the meeting, supervisors also thanked Sarah Aghassi, who has served as interim CAO since Robbins-Meyer’s departure.
