San Diego Supervisors to Establish AI Subcommittee

The growth of artificial intelligence (AI) will have massive implications for public policy. As the technology quickly advances, government leaders would be wise to prepare for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

San Diego County Supervisors took one of the first steps last Tuesday, authorizing a new Ad Hoc Subcommittee on Artificial Intelligence and Transformative Technologies. The motion was introduced by Chairwoman Nora Vargas and approved by all five supervisors.

According to City News Service, “the subcommittee will develop appropriate recommendations and actions on AI-related policies, review new technology procurements and data initiatives that involve an AI system, and review the governance for proactively managing and monitoring new AI advancements.

“Additionally, it will evaluate the county's current technology and communication needs and provide input to the county's chief administrative officer.”
