The 2017 County Health Rankings Are Here!
Move over, Marin! San Mateo County is now the healthiest in California according to the annual report from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Marin County, which had taken the top spot for the past seven years, was runner-up, followed by Santa Clara. California's least healthy counties include Modoc, Lake and Trinity. Alpine was not ranked.
The study took a number of factors into consideration: life expectancy; diet and exercise; birth rates; access to quality health care; education, income, and housing; air and water quality; and much more.
Most of the counties saw a drop in premature deaths, but there was still plenty of room for improvement across the state. The Foundation has been putting out the health rankings for the past eight years.
“We want to help people see that health is local, and see what’s happening in their communities so they can see where they can make change(s) to improve health,” said Kate Konkle, who heads the project’s Action Center Team.
The full report includes interactive maps, in-depth information on so-called "health gaps," and tips to for getting involved to enact policy changes. You can access it here.
