Industry to Host Specialized Autism Training for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department to Enhance Interactions with the Autistic Community

On April 16, the City of Industry will partner with Kate Movius of Autism Interaction Solutions and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Mental Evaluation Team (LASD MET) to host a specialized autism training for law enforcement to build awareness during Autism Acceptance Month. Throughout the specialized training, deputies and police officers will receive behavioral tools to better equip them on best practices to communicate with and deescalate individuals with autism and developmental disabilities.

Deputies will take part in sensory exercises, where they will gain first-hand experience on living as an individual with autism or mental disabilities. In addition, autistic co-trainers will be on-site to share personal stories about living on the autism spectrum and how law enforcement can best interact with individuals who are verbal, non-verbal, and anywhere in between.
