Steppe will also be the first Black woman to serve on the county’s board of supervisors.
“Hopefully, we have a peaceful election, and we count the votes, and that’s the end of it,” ssaid Registrar Cathy Darling Allen. But “it doesn’t escape me that we need to be cognizant and prepared to protect the safety of the ballots, our staff and voters."
Voter advocacy groups are calling on California Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber to closely monitor the Nov. 7 special election in Shasta County.
Other states, including Maryland and New York City, have banned the practice.
